CHFR-FM Update We recently received a donation of $500.00 from the Union Bay Credit Union. In addition to the grants we’ve received recently from the Regional District and the Community Fund, we are very pleased to have a positive bank balance of nearly $5,000! In addition, we have received over $100 from the little jar that Jason Dyer created and put out at the Gas Bar. Jason has been appointed Little Jar Man, and you will be seeing more of those little jars around and about. It seems that people prefer the little jars to donating at the Co-op till—only $50 came in over the summer from that source. Hope springs eternal, and we will be the recipient of the Co-op till donations through until November, so please remember to say when you pay for your groceries, ‘I want to donate’. More information about that is available from the hard-working friendly Co-op cashiers. We received some lovely and professional architectural drawings from Katherine Ronan (thank you Katherine), and have submitted those to the HIAA board. As soon as we get the go-ahead from them, we will start building of our station. With Albini out of the GasBar, we can no longer use that space as a drop-in and clearinghouse for Radio Society business. Anyone who wishes to renew their membership or become a member should leave a note in our box at Free Post (Upper left side corner). Call Albini at 335-3252 for more information or e-mail us at info@chfr.ca. As many of you already know we are a change of frequency requesting, from Industry Canada . In order for our signal to not be interfered with by a new Commercial Radio that will broadcast at 600 watts from Mt. Benson , we suggested 96.5 FM as the new frequency. Anyone who has comment or concerns is invited to let us and the CRTC know. The Application is available for consultation at the Free post, in the Society’s box. Anyone who wants their comments to be considered by the commission must send them before October 20 th,2005 , when it will form part of the public record of the proceeding. You can submit your written intervention to the Secretary General of the Commission in only one of the following formats: Internet: go to http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Notices/2005/pb2005-90.htm Then scroll down to Hornby Island application and click on [Broadcasting intervention/comments form] Or By mail to CRTC, Ottawa , Ontario K1A 0N2 Or By Fax at (819) 994-0218 Don’t forget to fill out your program host application and fill it out. To pick up an application, ask a member of the Programming Committee (Jason Dyer, Peter Cloud Panjoyah or Amber Boydell), or download here. Drop it off at the CHFR Free Post or hand it to one of the people above. Volunteer applications are also available for download; please do fill one out and drop it off in the CHFR Free Post box or hand it to any board member. The current Board of Directors includes the following people: Albini LaPierre , Phoenix Wolf-Ray , Bill Matthews, Lawrence Nyberg, Vern Wright, and Maggie May. The various subcommittees include Peter Cloud Panjoyah, Jason Dyer, Amber Boydell, Scott Sweeney and Pyx Sutherland. The website for CHFR is www.chfr.ca
What’s Up With the Radio This Summer? Good news! This summer your Co-op Till donations will go to support CHFR-FM, your local community radio station-to-be. And we’ve got a new frequency from Industry Canada, which will be 96.5 on the FM dial. And—last but not least—we recently received $2000 in grant funds from the Regional District—many thanks to our local government reps for supporting local radio! The big question I keep hearing is, why the heck isn’t CHFR-FM broadcasting already? We said we’d be broadcasting by summer, didn’t we? Well, we really did think we would this year. We were this close. However, we failed to reckon with the many levels of red tape that exist, even on Hornby. Originally, we planned to simply build the studio from the donated materials, no problem. We were just about set to go. Then HIAA informed us that they want proper architectural drawings for the studio building, and they want to approve everything we build on the land before we build it. Also, we will need to obtain a siting and use permit from Islands Trust. We hadn’t thought of all that—over-eager, perhaps. It’s been taking so long already and we were seeing light at the end of the tunnel. But more needs to be done. It’s all reasonable, and we’re willing to do it. We’ve got the wheels in motion— Katherine Ronan has generously offered to do the drawings for us and it should be happening even as I write. After the drawings are finished, they will go to Tom Knott, who is working on preparing the paperwork for the Islands Trust Siting & Use Permit application. That paperwork, including the architectural drawings, will then go to Bob Cain of the HIAA Board, and after consultation with the rest of the board, he will present it to the Islands Trust for approval. All of these things are dependent on other peoples’ timetables, and it is summer when everybody is busy, so we are once again in the position of not quite knowing when we will be ready to broadcast. The Islands Trust in particular as a body of government have their own rate of motion, and building on the studio can’t commence until they give the go-ahead. Beyond them, it’s possible that HIAA will wish to consult the Ministry of Lands & Forests (their landlords), and if that happens, well… there is no predicting a timetable. At this point, all bets are off, except for the bottom line--that radio on Hornby is not a question of ‘if’, but ‘when’. I for one have stopped making predictions when it will come to pass. It will happen when it happens, and the more help and support we can get in the process, the sooner it will be. Many many thanks, kudos and appreciations go to our many helpers and supporters, people like Katherine Ronan and Tom Knott, who have been very forthcoming with their help. Mia Wood and Karl Ostermann are working on logo design and creation; once that is finished, we will be able to create things like t-shirts, stickers & other promotional materials, as well as upgrading our website and business letterhead appearance. A flyer is going out in the mail in the next few days, designed by Pyx Sutherland with the help of Marc Roder, on lovely paper she has donated. So please do take a close look, if only to admire the look, and perhaps you’ll be moved to clip the coupon and send in your $10 membership fee. With donations of $50 or more, while supplies last, you can also get a free copy of ‘Airwaves’, the benefit compilation CD with music by various island artists. All those donations will go toward producing the next edition of Hornby music—‘Airwaves II’. We will be occasionally visible on the Co-op porch, in the ringside, or at the farmer’s market, depending on who can spare the time to get out there. You can talk to the folks at the Gas Bar, or you can talk to me at the farmer’s market, for more information—I’m always willing to talk about the radio. Don’t forget to fill out your volunteer application form (available at the Gas Bar) or your program host application (ditto). There are many ways you can help us to move the radio station from potential to actuality. Without naming dates, I feel it will be soon. I think we’ll be broadcasting by this fall. I said I wouldn’t predict, but I did. Think positively. Keep the faith! CHFR rocks! Yes!
CHFR-FM Program Applications Available CHFR-FM, the new legal community radio station-to-be on Hornby Island, has produced program application forms and is now accepting show proposals. These forms are available at the gas bar and, upon occasion, at HCRS fundraising tables on the Co-op porch, farmer's markets, open houses, etc. There is no deadline to submit your proposal per se, but as you might imagine, airtime space is limited, and of course, prime time slots will go fast. Be sure to be as thorough and detailed as you can be in answering the questions, particularly the question about the vision for your show, which asks you to use the back of the form. It can't hurt and can only help to fill up the entire blank page on the reverse side, or even more (it's a three page app). As it says on the form, you can return completed applications to the gas bar, the Hornby Community Radio Society box at the free post, or into the hands of Amber Boydell or Peter Cloud Panjoyah, HCRS programming subcommittee members. Please don't just hand the application to just anyone you think is associated with the station, it is simply easier on us if you submit to the proper channels above...thanks. Once you've read and digested the application, any questions or comments can be directed to myself at pjtree@island.net (or 335-1336), or Amber at wackygreenwitch@yahoo.ca (or 335-3252). Again, don't just ask any old station volunteer, because they may not have the latest or most accurate information. Peter Cloud Panjoyah

Hornby Community Radio News May 2/05 We have officially heard from Industry Canada and our official call letters are CHFR-FM That's Hornby Free Radio.... We will be needing a logo to go with that! Then we can start fundraising in earnest with t-shirts, bumper stickers etc. All you graphic and doodle artists, see what you can come up with. We are currently in the process of applying for a new frequency, since Westwave has pre-empted our previous 91.5. We will be letting you know what it is, but it looks like it's going to be 89.5. The tower is all in one piece, laying on the ground ready for erection. There have been delays around delivery of the concrete blocks that we need to anchor the guy wires in, and as soon as those arrive, the erection will proceed. We are in great need of fund-raising assistance! Everything hinges around getting enough dollars; we have tons of energy for the building projects and tower-raising, we are being rallied around wonderfully there (thank you to everyone who has become involved). If you have fund-raising skills, energy and/or time to contribute, please call 5-1336 and we'll tawk. Check out the photos of the tower project...
Hornby Community Radio News April 23, 2003 Update: Westwave, the Sunshine Coast megawatt station who has applied for 91.7, has been approved by the CRTC--what this means is, we have to apply for a new frequency (they will completely drown us out at this distance). We will not be found at 91.5 on the radio dial! As of this writing, we don't know what frequency will be assigned to us. This is one of the hazards of having a developmental licence... once we begin broadcasting (and this may set us back somewhat), we need to begin work on upgrading our license to A1, which would give us a protected frequency. We will inform the community asap about what the new frequency is going to be. The first meeting of the new Board of Directors was spirited, as plans for the next couple of months were made. We have a burst of new energy going into this pre-broadcast season, which is most appropriate for the tasks that need to be done now. By the time you read this, the radio tower should be in place. As of writing this, preparations for erection Day (on April 24 th, or May 1 st) are well on their way, scraping the old paint off and repainting the tower sections has to come first, along with positioning and anchoring the guy wires. We are getting help from the experts who were here to install the 911 Tower. Regular Sunday work parties are happening, and volunteer energies are much needed and appreciated for those. We are currently researching the costs of building a small studio with volunteer help and donated materials. We have a list of materiel needed for this particular project available at the gasbar and work should be underway soon. We are again applying for the Regional District Grant-in-Aid, which will hopefully aid our efforts to get on the air as soon as possible. We are in need of basic studio equipment and seek the funding to help us with that. We are looking to hire a grant writer to help us with fund-raising projects; we have information on three separate grants that we could apply for but need someone with the expertise who would be willing and able to take on that job. Please apply in writing in the HCRS box at the Free Post, email hornbyradio@yahoo.ca or call 335-3252. The Programming Subcommittee is still working on developing application forms for aspiring DJs to fill out so they can get on the air. If you have a vision of a radio show you would like to host, talk to Jason Dyer or Peter Cloud Panjoyah. Some members have already submitted their shows. There will be a pre-broadcast party at Joe King on May 22 nd, with all-day indoor/outdoor live broadcasting with; musical information, community announcement, live musicians, as well as, potentially, Hornby’s first radio play, recorded in front of you, the audience, and of course DJs spinning music right into the evening, all through a fair like atmosphere. This will be an opportunity to practice hosting a show! Watch for posters for that event. Contact HCRS at the free post for renting a vending space. We continue to require the following list of items: cement, wood, cables, wiring,a breaker box, fencing, shelving, brackets, vents, paint, nails, screws, rugs/carpeting, plywood, CD players, tape decks, turntables, mikes, CDs & other media, powerbars, an oil filled radiator, computers, mixers, headphones. Thank you to all the people who have donated items so far! Don’t forget to purchase your copy of Airwaves, the Hornby Compilation Benefit CD for community radio on Hornby, available at the Co-op. We only have a few copies left, and once they’re gone, they’re gone… we will likely produce a new compilation rather than recreate the old one. Memberships continue to be available at the Gas Bar for $10 per year. To contact HCRS, email hornbyradio@yahoo.ca, call 335-3252 or drop a note into the HCRS box at the Free Post. You can also talk to any of the Board members. The official slate of Board positions for the 2005 year are: Albini LaPierre, president; PhoenixWolf-Ray, Vice-President; Bill Matthews, Secretary; Lawrence Nyberg, Treasurer; Verne Wright, Samuel Roberge and Chris Denton, Directors-at-Large.
