the latest from my ber-lahg

Category: personal words, borrowed words. Posted by phee at 2:39 am.

Somebody (Neil?) was kind enough to mention that he enjoyed reading my occasional blogly blatherings here, so being the attention-whore that I am ;-) I’ll keep posting them.

This is the latest entry from my website ‘Spreading the Gaia Word‘, formerly ‘Truth is a Crazy Poet’. It’s spring. Life is good. Life is better than good. Read on, if you care to.

Taurus New Moon musical epiphanies

It’s the Taurus New Moon today! Time for grounding and getting real.

I’ve been a busy girl—it’s been a while since I had time to write. Experiences pile up when you don’t write regularly! And then I feel overwhelmed by things to say and so don’t say them, and so more experiences pile up and more things to talk about. Whew!

Reminder - May Day Ferry Rally May 1 10am

Category: hornby words, word up! - events. Posted by Peter at 6:59 pm.

This is the Fair Ferry Fare Rally Reminder —

Carpool from 10:00 Hornby Ferry to catch 10:40 ferry to Buckley Bay. Denman Islanders will meet and drive us across the island.

After rally at Buckley Bay, walk on 12:10 ferry back to Denman and attend the Ferry Advisory Committee at the Denman Senior’s Hall.

Gold Card Seniors load for free — Help! You are needed to help “seize” the car deck.

WHY YOU SHOULD BE THERE ON MAY 1ST:

On April Fool’s Day, after working hard to impose further crippling fare hikes on island residents, the Liberal-laden board overseeing BC Ferry Services rewarded themselves with a retroactive $233,000 pay hike on top of salaries and bonuses totaling $730,000 — for attending meetings to increase our fares and vote themselves pay raises.

On hearing that families and businesses throughout the island are being devastated by constantly rising ferry fares, Transport Minister Kevin Falcon answered: “Boo hoo.”

We say, “Boo who?”

Turn out on this historic day of international protest and solidarity - and tune in for some surprising developments. Come out and reclaim Marine Highway 22.

hump day laugh

Category: what's so funny. Posted by phee at 12:14 pm.

Wednesday is known as ‘hump day’ in the mainstream world; the middle day of the week that can be hard to drag yer butt over before you can slide to the weekend. I still live a very far from mainstream life, and hump day is a day off for me, so it’s a non-issue. Still, I thought some of you could use a mid-week lift, a snicker and maybe even a guffaw.

May 2, 8:30pm - Final Dance Friday of the Season

Category: hornby words, word up! - events. Posted by Peter at 10:26 am.

This Friday night is the final DF family dance of the season at the Community Hall, beginning at 8:30pm with a warmup segment a half hour earlier. Join us for world music grooves, particularly early on in the evening, with a preponderance of funk later in the evening. Cost is only $5 for adults and those under 17 are admitted free.

If there are any willing volunteers we could use a door and cleanup person for this week - please contact me @ 1336.

If you haven’t checked out the dances at the Hall, this is your time to experience them! Many islanders are enjoying the regular dance opportunities - come see what it’s all about.

I expect to run this dance again in late October barring unforeseen circumstances, but one never knows the future. Hope to see you at the Hall this Friday night.

it’s earth day, whatever that means

Category: worldwide words - nature & environment. Posted by phee at 12:25 pm.

This guy’s right, the planet will go on, with or without us. It’s US we need to worry about. It’s our own nest we’re fouling, our own habitat we’re busily destroying while we industriously wipe out the habitats of other species. Earth is bigger than we can imagine and life in general is infinitely adaptable. Some new species will evolve to fill our niche if we ourselves end up included in the mass extinction we’re creating (and I don’t think there’s any debate about whether or not we’re doing that). The problem is us, and the solution is us, but it’s not the Earth’s problem. It’s ours.

I don’t believe it’s misdirected to love the planet, though, nor do I feel that love is unrequited. I believe what I believe. Briefly, I think She’s a Tough Love Mamma who doesn’t coddle her kids, though she provides what we need in abundance. But we’re not all that to her; She’s got other kids too, and we need to get with the program. Brats. We can love her all we want, but that’s not going to be enough. If we don’t clean up our act, the ‘Human Show’ will be canceled and the next show will go on without us.

Let’s dump “Earth Day”

Affection for our planet is misdirected and unrequited. We need to focus on saving ourselves. from Salon.com

By Joseph Romm

April 22, 2008 | I don’t worry about the earth. I’m pretty certain the earth will survive the worst we can do to it. I’m very certain the earth doesn’t worry about us. I’m not alone. People got more riled up when scientists removed Pluto from the list of planets than they do when scientists warn that our greenhouse gas emissions are poised to turn the earth into a barely habitable planet.

The earth is certainly not important enough to qualify for an ABC debate question. Who wears an Earth lapel pin? Arguably, concern over the earth is elitist, something people can afford to spend their time on when every other need is met. But elitism is out these days. Only bitter environmentalists cling to Earth Day. We need a new way to make people care about the nasty things we’re doing with our cars and power plants. At the very least, we need a new name.

How about Nature Day or Environment Day? Personally, I am not an environmentalist. I don’t think I’m ever going to see the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I wouldn’t drill for oil there. But that’s not out of concern for the caribou but for my daughter and the planet’s next several billion people, who will need to see oil use cut sharply to avoid the worst of climate change. tase the varmints!

Category: bc words. Posted by phee at 12:02 am.

In a burst of spectacularly unbelievable stupidity (or insanity–or malevolence, you choose), Skytrain authorities stand behind their policy of tasering fare evaders. That’s right. For the sake of a measly buck or two, they intend to coolly point torture devices at those nefarious fare-evading outlaws and watch them writhe and shriek in agony. This is straight out of the creepiest dystopian visions in books like ‘1984′ or ‘Brave New World’.

The Vancouver Sun says,

Officers policing Metro Vancouver’s transit services will continue Tasering “non-compliant” passengers, despite outrage over reports the weapon has been used against non-violent fare-evaders.

“Absolutely. Absolutely. Yup,” Insp. Daniel Dureau of the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority Police said, during a brief telephone interview Thursday after he was asked if his officers would still use the Taser on non-violent passengers.

Fiery activist grandma Betty Krawczyk has this to say on her blog, Betty’s Early Edition (and there’s not much I can add to that):

THE POSSES RIDE AGAIN!
Even though I’m pushing eighty and was born into the time of the lawlessness of the Klu Klux Klan, I have never seen a posse except in old cowboy movies. Posse you might ask? Well, a posse is formed when the bad guys get out of hand in this righteous little village and the right thinking sheriff has to deputize some equally right thinking men to go chase down and hang some uppity Indians or black people or cattle rustlers who are causing trouble. Deputizing the white, right thinking men means the newly deputized got to shoot to kill. Didn’t know anything about the law to speak of, couldn’t read or write too good, were drunkards or wife beaters themselves, but give em a gun and some kind of deputizing and by George, they became the knights of justice, equality and protectors of children and women kind.

balancing the bad with the good

In the face of my relentless pressure toward positivity, I find my negative thoughts and beliefs are acting out more and more. It’s as though they are kids being shushed for being ‘bad’ while other kids are being praised for being ‘good’. The good kids beam quietly in the face of my approval, while the bad kids shriek ever-more-loudly, seeking my attention.

I thought I’d give my bad kids some attention for a change. Here’s what they have to say.

the bats are dying

Category: worldwide words - nature & environment. Posted by phee at 8:37 pm.

At the risk of spreading yet more and more bad news, here’s another bit to concern us all. At some point (my theory goes) there will be a camel-back breaking moment in which we will rise en masse and say, enough is enough, dangitall.

First It Was Bees, Now It’s Bats That Are Dying

Friday, April 11, 2008 by: Heidi Stevenson

(NaturalNews) Though bats are a bit spooky looking, inviting thoughts of Dracula, the real horror story is that bats are becoming sick and perishing. A massive bat die-off is happening. Their extinction in the United States is threatening — and no one knows why.
Just as news of the massive bee die off is fading away — though not actually ending — the plight of bats in the United States is starting to come out. The loss of bats may be an even worse concern than the loss of bees, which are exclusively tame and mass-raised — over-stressed, over-bred, and grown to be over-sized. They’re used to pollinate crops, especially ones that are not natural to the areas in which they’re grown, such as almonds in California. Wild bees are doing just fine.
