letting go

Category: housekeeping words, word up!. Posted by phee at 7:43 pm.

It’s a hard thing, but I’ve decided to let go of this forum. It’s coming up to two years since I left Hornby and it’s finally sunk in that I don’t live here anymore, though I continue to visit and love the place. I have family here; I can’t go too far. Still, my finger has left the pulse of the Hornby community. As a result of my own (and others’) lack of participation, this place been pretty quiet for a long time. Perhaps a new person can step into the breach, if there is still a need for this forum, and bring it back to life.

WoMb will continue to exist at this same address, so people like Peter and other registered contributors may well continue to post to it. I very much hope so, in fact; please feel free to check back. It may come back to life. I will need somebody to take over the moderator job, because without a moderator, the site will be inundated with spam articles and comments. Not good. I still regularly delete comments from various penis-enlargement and diet drug sites that would (if comments weren’t being moderated) be posted. Moderator? Anyone? Peter?

I’ll be posting content that I would have previously posted to WoMb on my own blog / website at “Spreading the Gaia Word” which is where my webly energy has been going lately. Maybe I’ll see y’all there.

It’s been awesome and I’m really sorry to be releasing this space. It was a hard decision, but it feels right. I do dearly hope somebody will see fit to take it on and restore some vibrancy here. Still, maybe it’s not even necessary anymore. You all can decide that for yourselves.

There’s lots of interesting stuff in the archives; there have been some dramas enacted here which might be historically intriguing to some. In fact, the original site still exists and there’s quite a lot in those archives as well.

One final note… I am shocked and saddened at the passing of Zonko / Billy Little. He, as much as anyone, has defined Hornby for me since I first moved to the island. I’ve had many interactions with him over the years as a performing poet and co-participant with him in many events and gatherings. While never one of my intimate friends, he was definitely in my tribe and the hole he left is palpable and painful, even from here.

I saw Billy briefly the last time I was on the island and he definitely wasn’t looking good. He was a great soul, and his poem ‘This Kiss’ remains one of my all-time favourites. I would love a copy of it.

There will be a gathering for Billy at Joe King on February 14th; if the fates allow, maybe I’ll come for a visit at that time. I would like to be a part of that. If so, perhaps I will see you there.

Ciao, all.

World Music Family Dance – Dance Friday, Jan 30, 8pm

Category: hornby words, word up! - events. Posted by Peter at 1:14 pm.

The next installment of Dance Friday, our Hornby community family dance is Friday evening at the Community Hall, doors at 7:30 for a half hour warmup period, then an 8pm start. We spin largely world music tunes from every corner of the globe, including some good down-home funk. The cost is only $5, and kids under 17 are in for free.

This is a nonprofit event and the dances need community support to continue. So bring the kids, and come work up a groovy sweat sashaying on Hornby’s best dance floor this Friday evening.

Mesothelioma – Asbestos Cancer

Category: worldwide words - health. Posted by mesothe at 1:10 pm.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer primarily caused by asbestos exposure. There is a higher incidence of mesothelioma among U.S. Navy personnel, shipyard workers, etc. due to asbestos exposure on Navy ships.  In addition, family members and others closely associated to those exposed to asbestos may also be at risk (for example the wife who washed her husband’s work clothes). The cancer typically has a latency period of 20 to 50 years.

The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells: One layer immediately surrounds the organ; the other forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the beating heart and the expanding and contracting lungs) to glide easily against adjacent structures.

The mesothelium has different names, depending on its location in the body. The peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity. The pericardium covers and protects the heart. The mesothelial tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. The tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs in women.

Devanshu’s project needs some support

Category: words from away. Posted by phee at 12:49 pm.

This is an email from Darlene in Uganda; if anybody feels moved to help, please reply directly to her. This is obviously a worthy cause and I hope some of y’all will step up to the plate, but as she points out, there is no obligation whatsoever. – phee

Hi folks,

We’re really hating to send this email out, but find ourselves in a sort of a pickle.

Devanshu’s building project here in Uganda has run out of money, and they need another $2000 or so to complete it.

The major dilemma is that the building is intended to be a medicinal plant processing centre and money-making venture, and until its finished, the organization can’t make any money to carry on with their conservation and education work.

So, the building has a roof on it, but now needs doors and windows and finishing done so that it can be locked up and used for herb processing.

We really hesitated to send out this request, as so many of you were so generous after our first request last year to support our projects. We wouldn’t be doing it if we didn’t think the project was in some jeopardy.
And of course, there is absolutely no pressure for you to respond to this request in any way. The only person who knows what to do with this is you.

(Isn’t it a pain having friends in development work??)

We love you!

Darlene & Devanshu

travels with my mother

Category: words from away. Posted by phee at 3:39 am.

Hello Friends,

Devanshu and I just got back from a month of traveling around Uganda with my mother. What a journey I tell you. This country is really so stunningly beautiful and mysterious and full of crazy flowers and even crazier animals and birds. It’s also infuriating, with unbelievable roads, and drivers that make my hair stand on end every two minutes, and a very different idea about what service means for us Westerners. Then there’s the constant view of mud huts, people walking miles with no shoes, and the ever-present “Muzungu – give me money!”. It was a bit over-whelming, and like most experiences here, I’m not sure I will be able to process it all for some time to come.

The great part was finally having contact with someone from home – and the fact that it was my mum made it the most special trip possible. I really admire her for making the long journey, to a place she had really never wanted to see in the first place – especially since her fear of flying was such a big deal (though not any more, right mum?). I know she was somewhat overwhelmed also, but that the kindness of the people here, along with experiences possible no where else (imagine taking a 2 hour boat ride and being able to see more than 20 kinds of mammals and over 50 kinds of birds – including elephants, hippos, water buffalo, warthogs, antelopes, etc) made sure that she had the trip of a lifetime. Our new friends here really made my mum feel welcome and I think she enjoyed experiencing a new culture. It was also a chance for us to see more of this country, as we haven’t had the time or the money to do so up until now. I can honestly recommend a trip to Uganda to any of you out there who might be considering a venture into Africa. The tourist industry here is still pretty young, which means you get to see some very stunning sights without a million other tourists also huddled around the same lion – making it feel like you are experiencing something pretty unique and untouched. Elections and Other Unpalatable Things.

Category: worldwide words. Posted by don at 3:19 pm.

I have given up on “strategic voting”. I found myself walking away from the polling place with a bad taste in my mouth. It was not from licking the little pencil.

We are now co-opting our system to where you are now encouraged to vote for someone you don’t want, in order to avoid someone else you don’t want. It is getting really twisted.

Our system only allows us to vote for someone. We need some more boxes on the ballot. There should be two boxes next to each candidate. One for “YES”. That is for voting for a candidate that you really want in. The box beside it is “NO”. An “X” would indicate that you are willing to accept any of the others on the ballot but “not this one”. This negates one of the other “YES” votes. We should not be forced to choose the “least worst” to avoid the “most worst”.

There needs also be a stand alone box at the bottom of the ballot. This one is for “NONE OF THE ABOVE”. If “NONE OF THE ABOVE” actually wins the riding it should automatically trigger a by-election. The by-election should take place within a very short time, two weeks or a month and none of the candidates who appeared on the first ballot are allowed to run.

None of this is likely to happen. It would allow the voters too much choice in who their representatives are or are not.

That brings up another matter. At what point in time did our “elected representatives” become our “rulers”. We really don’t need to give someone else our vote. On anything. Modern technology can allow us to make our own choice on every question confronted by any governing body. There is no reason that any concerned voter could not log on to a website and vote on the issues of the day in real time. Well, actually there is one reason. We would no longer need politicians.

So how would this work you might ask. Here is one possibility.

If an individual or group feels that they have the BIG IDEA as to how this country should be run they sit down and draw up a plan. A comprehensive plan. Not a bunch of election promises but a step by step plan as to how they would have things be for the next four years. Others do the same. These plans are published well in advance of an election.

Then we have an election. We choose which plan we want as our guideline and that person or group gets the nod. So far it sounds much like the existing system but here is the difference.

The election winner is then hired to implement his plan. The winning plan is incorporated into law. It can not be changed. No more broken election promises. If it turns out that some part of the plan must be changed for whatever reason the administration can not change it without voter permission.

In this age of instant communication we can, as individuals, vote on any little matter that requires change to the plan. We can vote on any appointees. We can vote on tax changes. We can vote on how our tax money is being spent. We can decide if our country is going to war or if we get new streetlights. We can decide whether directors of crown corporations get pay raises or if our neighbors house is too tall. Any of the decisions that are currently being made by those who we control only with the threat of losing their job in three years can be made by each and any concerned voter. This applies to all levels of government. from Federal to local.

A voters card in our wallets will allow us to exercise true democracy – on a daily basis. It is no harder than checking your bank balance online and is probably more secure than a credit card purchase from Ebay. We can vote from home, from a public access center, a library or from a Blackberry. Any place with internet access. Anyone who is concerned can be involved and those who can’t be bothered can simply ignore the process. As they do now.

The administrator of the current plan is our elected head of state. He can wear black tie and glad hand visiting fireman. Pay him well. He will only be around until his plan is complete or he blows it. Did I mention that unauthorized deviation from a plan once it is in law is grounds for instant dismissal. Each and every time a voter logs on to the issues of the day he sees a box marked NO CONFIDENCE. If a majority of the concerned click that box the administration of the day is gone. Finito. Sayonara. The voters can decide to hire a new administrator to complete the plan or start fresh.

I was asked yesterday about how local issues would be handled. Specifically, How would we deal with government subsidies to keep ferry prices down? They said that if it came to a vote those who do not use ferries would vote them down. There are two answers. First, what does it say in the plan? If we elected someone in this province they should have put a lot of thought into the ferry situation and their solutions have already been accepted and are in law. Second, this is a democracy. As much as it might upset our little world – majority rules.

Something along these lines is currently impossible. Politicians play politics. They do not make plans much beyond getting elected and once elected it is a few years of anything goes until the next election looms. Then it’s back to the little blue books and the little red books of election promises in a desperate attempt to get in that all important second election victory that secures the retirement plans.

If I sound a bit upset with the status quo it is because I am. Most people should be. I am fed up with politicians who, when questioned after an election, say with a laugh “You didn’t believe that did you. It was only an election promise.” I am fed up with self awarded retroactive pay raises. I want to see the electorate have more than a token opportunity once every three or four years to choose between being held in contempt or flat out ignored.

I will never again vote for least worst.

Now, where did I put that mouthwash?

happy and a little envious

Category: worldwide words. Posted by phee at 12:32 pm.

Yes… we had our disappointing election, and they’ve had a nationwide epiphany, an orgy of joy and transformation and hope for change. It’s inspiring and exciting and scary all at once. How big of a change will this really bring? How different can things get, considering that the system is still the system, and just how much power does a president actually have? We will see…

This moved me, in particular. The emotion and heart that people are experiencing through this is touching and astonishing. Lovely.

When will it be our turn?

blog action day: poverty

Category: speaking the word, worldwide words - issues. Posted by phee at 4:31 pm.

I signed this blog on for Blog Action Day, which is today, in the hopes that the action of signing up would prove an inspiration to myself and the other WoMb contributors, who have all been pretty dormant lately (is anybody out there?). Not only that, but I signed my other blog on too, and wrote this today. To that extent, it was a success (I wrote something).

I had hoped that other contributors to this blog would feel inspired to write, but I haven’t heard from anyone, and I’ve already written my piece. If you want to read it, go here.

It’s not too, late though, if anybody has some inspiring words to write about poverty. It’s a worthy subject. Let me know, okay?
